A call for the fight against poverty.
Yesterday's Wowowee Tragedy sent shivers through my spine, waking the rest of the Filipino nation to the alarming poverty sweeping the country. 70 died in the struggle to get the chance to win P1million, a house and lot and a car in one of the broadcast giant's variety shows.
People lined up, slept on the streets for days just to get in the stadium and have their go at winning the prize...which was slim to none. Instead of grasping that glimmer of hope, the probable answer to their poverty, they were further pushed into the darkness with loved ones corpses scattered on the street, loved ones injured from the pushing and shoving in the stampeded.
Our fellow Filipinos are calling out to the rest of us more well-to-do brothers and sisters: HELP US!
A time for sharing. A time for sacrifice. A time for national unity against poverty. As Jose Javier Reyes said, in times like these, there is no kapuso, no kapamilya but just Filipinos.
Maybe its about time that we set aside at least P20 a day for our less fortunate Filipinos. Just P20.
But then again, this should be a partnership. They should also be able to help themselves rise from their current state and not depend on what is given to them.
I do pray that hand-in-hand, we would able to help them and they would help themselves. so that we would be able to rise from the ashes, rebuilding our nation...
